Welcome to Theology That Walks!
What comes to mind when you think about the word “theology”? Stuffy men and women in robes who have no fun? Old, dusty, nearly unreadable books that would only bore you if you spent time trying to decipher them? Or do you picture high towers and ships in the sky—lofty ideas that have no grounding in the day-to-day demands, hardships, and decisions of life?
Would it surprise you to learn that theology is none of those things?
Theology, rightly understood, is the knowledge of God and his creation through the lens of the Bible. And that is immensely practical.
Theology walks. It travels with everyday people to everyday places in everyday circumstances.
Theology walks because people walk, and, as beings created in the image of God, we are inseparably linked to knowledge of God and his creation because we are and exist in that creation. Theology also walks because, as believers, God walks with us as believers indwelt by the Holy Spirit.
- When life seems so difficult that it takes all your strength to get out of bed in the morning, theology teaches you that God gives wisdom and strength to those who ask for it.
- When your brother or sister in Christ is caught in sin and desires biblical counsel, theology tell you how to gently restore them to a right relationship with God and others.
- When you feel betrayed or alone or trapped, theology teaches us that Jesus is closer than any other and will never leave.
Theology—through the Bible—walks with us as we live, breathe, eat, sleep, talk, think, dream, and do.
“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us…”
2 Peter 1:3
The Purpose of this Blog
The purpose of this blog is to help you see that theology walks.
As believers journey through this life, we are called to grow and change to be more like Christ (theologians call that sanctification). We change by learning more about who God is and what he has done for us through his revealed Word—the Bible.
This blog’s goal is to help believers who are convinced that God’s call on their lives is to grow to be more like Christ and to change away from who they were and toward who Christ wants them to be. Here you will find essays, thoughts, and applications that take Scripture and apply it to our lives.
This blog exists to help you walk theology into life.
About the Author
From an early age, theology held a fascination for me. Learning about Jesus and telling others about him has been a central goal of my life. I remember looking up to my pastor as a young child and thinking that I wanted his job someday—the job of standing in the pulpit and explaining God and his ways to others. As a teen, I was given opportunities to preach, and I started to grow in my ability to exposit God’s Word to others.
After earning a B.A. in Biblical Studies, I continued to wrestle with questions of growth, sanctification, and spiritual change.
I realized through my own hurts and the hurts that I began to see in other believers’ lives that the Bible has so much to say about how we live and grow and deal with hard things. My focus shifted from just preaching to more personal ministry of the Word to others through the framework of Biblical Counseling. My goal was now more refined: help others grow through the clear, personal application of the Bible to the trials and temptations of daily living.
To pursue that goal, I not only completed my BA, but I am also nearly done with my MA in Biblical Counseling and my Biblical Counseling Certification with ACBC.
This blog is an outgrowth of that goal, as I seek to develop those ideas in written form. I am also seeking in my personal life to live out that mission in service as a deacon in my church, a husband and father in my home, and a testimony for Christ in my community.
Practical Theology Pillars
Just like any good building has beams grounded in a foundation, this blog is founded on a couple of pillars (or main topics) rooted in the foundation of Scripture. These pillars provide a basic framework to build blog posts, just as beams support trusses, insulation, and sheetrock. Below are the three pillars that the posts on this blog will rely on for support:
Theology for Practice
This pillar emphasizes taking rich and deep theological concepts and explaining them in practical, down-to-earth ways.
Posts supported by this pillar will seek to talk about a topic in one of the eight umbrellas of theology:
- Scripture
- God
- Jesus
- The Holy Spirit
- Man
- Salvation
- The Church
- End Times
. . . and apply it to the lives of believers through the lens of Scripture.
One-Another Living
This pillar emphasizes the biblical teaching that believers are not called to live alone but are commanded to live in unity to each other generally as believers, and specifically as members of a local church.
Posts supported by this pillar will look at how we live life together—discipling, encouraging, and counseling one another as the body of Christ grows into his likeness.
Growth and Change
This pillar emphasizes that believers are to be constantly evolving—becoming less like who they were in the flesh and more like they are to be as those walking in the Spirit.
Posts supported by this pillar will explore spiritual growth, biblical counseling, and sanctification through the lens of the sufficient, inspired, and inerrant Word of God.
